- Later Maturing
- High Yielding
- High Quality
- Very Palatable
TAKENA orchardgrass is high yielding, later maturing orchardgrass with high nutritional value, good disease resistance, and excellent palatability. TAKENA is great for grazing or hay situations.
Maturity –A key to using orchardgrasses with legumes. Researches and hay producers alike know that the best orchardgrasses to use with alfalfa and clover are later maturing varieties. The same is true for grass-only hay production. Takena has proven time and time again that it is among the later maturing varieties, such as Haymate and Libra. Using a late maturing variety helps keep grass quality high at time of harvest and gives hay farmers the maximum harvest window possible.
Yield –Throughout the numerous sites that Takena has been in trial, Takena consistently yields among the top varieties for tonnage per acre in both hay and grazing trials.

High Quality –Takena excellent feed value will be appreciated for all types of livestock including dairy cows, beef cows, horses, sheep, and goats. From research conducted in Iowa and Pennsylvania, farmers can expect the following average feed values:
Palatability – At the University of Wisconsin, Takena scored numerically higher than any other orchardgrass variety for both total intake and palatability over two years. In fact, it even outscored all other entries, including festuloliums, ryegrasses, timothys, and bromes!

Pennsylvania Data
Takena was sown at Rock Springs PA in August 1997 under a hay management trial. It was also sown in a grazing trial in 2001. In the 1997 trial Takena’s 3-year yield was statistically equal to the top yielding variety with above average late summer cuttings. Samples taken for forage quality data ranked Takena in the top 3 varieties, with only Haymate and Pennlate scoring better ADF/NDF numbers.
In the 2001 grazing trial, after one year’s data, Takena was the 2nd most consumed forage, only outscored by Pennlate. Whether for hay or grazing, Takena is a great choice for Pennsylvania!

* Forage consumed (pounds per acre DM basis). Spring (all grazings before June 15), summer (all grazings between June 16 and August 31), fall (all grazings after September 1). Amount of forage consumed by grazing animals was equivalent to forage available because high stocking density did not allow animal preference.
Ohio Data
1997-2001 Ohio Forage Performance Trials - Takena was sown at Ohio State in Columbus, OH in April,1997. Trial results over the next 4 years proved Takena to be one of the latest maturing varieties. In fact, no commercially available variety had a later heading rating than Takena. Varieties with similar heading were Libra and Haymate. Takena yielded a total tonnage of 17.73 tons/acre in the 5 years, exceeded statistically only by Haymate, Stampede and OFI-93M.

1) Yield based on difference between before-graze and after-graze pasture plate measurements reported as tons/acre
2) PALAT.=Palatability rating 0=0% grazed, 1=20%, 2=40%, 3=60%, 4=80%, 5=100% grazed. Palatability of grasses under grazing is determined by visual
estimation of percent defoliation of plots. RATED IN 1999
The visual determination is made midway during mob grazing by beef cows of the grass plots for yield determination.
^Variety means are LSMEANS derived from nearest neighbor statistical analysis. Therefore, season total may not always be the arithmetic sum of individual grazing periods.

Quicksand (a reclaimed mine site)
The first trial data from 1996 was a maturity rating on May 23rd of ’97. Takena was significantly later than Hallmark, Benchmark, Potomac. It was most close to Haymate, Udder, and Baridana. Takena had the highest yield of all 8 commercial entries the first year, yielding 5.91 tons/acre from five cuts. The next year, only Haymate yielded numerically, but not statistically higher. Takena still held the first place for 2-year total yield at 10.39 tons/acre. Harvest in 1998 was 3 cuttings.
A second planting at Quicksand was done in 1997. After 4-years worth of data Takena was only surpassed by Benchmark for total tonnage. Again, only numeric, not statistically different. Takena also proved again to be a later maturing orchardgrass, maturing significantly later than Benchmark, Renegade, Summer Green, Hallmark, Crown, Stampede, Martin, and Shiloh.
Again, in 2001 Takena was planted at Quicksand. The first two years of data record Takena as being third in numeric rank, yet statistically equal to the top 2 varieties, which were Crown Royale and CAS-EG33. Takena’s 2nd yields both years were well above the average. Total cuttings were 4.67 from four cuttings. In 2002, only two other varieties were noted with later heading scores.
Princeton
After two years of data, Takena was the 4th highest variety numerically and statistically equal to the highest yielding variety with a 2-year tonnage of 7.69 tons/acre. Takena’s maturity rating was taken on April 28th of 1998. At that time, Takena was significantly later than Comet, Benchmark, Crown, Potomac, Mammoth, Renegade, and Hallmark. Only Artic had a later maturity rating. Takena’s maturity was most close to Haymate and Condor.
In the 2002 planting, Takena was the highest yielding variety with a notable higher than average yield in the third cutting.
Lexington
Takena was first entered into Lexington hay trials in 1994. After three years of data, Takena yielded statistically equal to the highest yielding variety, Condor. It was also entered into a grazing trial in 1994. After 3 years, Takena had proven it could contend with any other entry for both yield and tonnage under grazing, again scoring statistically equal to the best variety.
It was planted again in a hay trial in 1995 and was at the top of the charts the next year with a first year yield of 4.72 tons/acre. The following year, Bronc and Shiloh surpassed Takena numerically, but not statistically.
In 1997 Takena was planted in both hay and grazing trials at Lexington. After two years, Takena again was recognized as being a later maturing variety, significantly later than Summer Green, Stampede, Benchmark, and Crown. It was most close to Haymate and Ambrosia for maturity. The grazing trial evaluated tonnage in 1998 and stand ratings the following 3 years. Takena stayed significantly equal to the top varieties for tonnage. Takena’s stand ratings remained consistently equal to other varieties such Haymate, Condor, Crown, Benchmark, and Warrior. This site was continuously grazed during the summer months and resulted in essential little significance between most entries.
The 2002-03 data from the 2001 planting placed Takena as the 2nd highest yielding variety only exceeded by the experimental OG 9204. Only two varieties (Athos & BAR 98-4) showed later, but not significant, heading date. Takena received a 5 out of 5 for vigor.
